Ryze recently released a new version of the Tello, called the Tello EDU. It takes everything we love about the Tello and adds to that more programming features. This awesome drone is incredibly stable, has an HD camera, intelligent flight modes and now can be programmed in Scratch, Python, and Swift.
The Original Tello
The original Tello is one of our favorite drones. It is the one drone we recommend to any beginner looking to get into the hobby for less than $100. The 5MP camera on both versions of the Tello is excellent and utilizes electronic image stabilization to smooth out the footage.
The intelligent flight modes are fun and easy to use and give the Tello another edge over other similarly priced drones. While the original Tello was programmable using Scratch and Droneblocks the new Tello EDU allows for more languages and more customizability and options.
The Tello EDU
The new Tello EDU give you more flexibility in what you can code. The new SDK 2.0 has more commands and increased data interfaces. With the Tello EDU you now have the ability to access the camera while coding. You can even program multiple Tellos at one time. You can create your own drone dance or light show. Ryze has even included mission pads. With the mission pads the Tello will preform precoded commands when it reaches the mission pad. Think of mission pads as guiding points that can tell you Tello what to do.
Coding with the Tello
I have used the original Tello to code with both Scratch and Droneblocks. It worked but was a little clunky using Scratch. Droneblocks worked well but I felt like the coding was very limited. I’m excited to try the new Tello EDU.
