Looking for a good Mavic 2 filter? We recently picked up filters for both our Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom from Freewell. These are low-cost filters but how do they stack up against some of the more expensive ones like Polar Pro? Let’s take a look.
Freewell Mavic 2 Filters
Before you can add a new filter to your Mavic 2 drone you’ll need to know how to get the clear glass piece off of your drone. The Mavic 2 Pro requires you to push in then rotate counter-clockwise. The Mavic 2 Zoom is a simple threaded piece, but it is difficult to get started. We recommend grabbing a pair of rubber gloves for added friction and it will come right off. Check out the video below for more details about taking on and off your Mavic 2 filters.
First, let’s be clear that these are pretty good filters. They work quite well. In fact, after having some discussions with people familiar with drone filters, it is very likely that the quality is on par with any other reputable brand you might consider. They probably all come off the same assembly line in China. So do you really want to pay for a more popular name brand? Chances are the “American” company you are buying them from got them from the same source.
Mavic 2 ND Filters
We did some in-depth testing with these filters and we found the Mavic 2 Zoom filters are right on in terms of the darkness you would come to expect at the stated ND level. However, the Mavic 2 Pro filters weren’t quite as dark as expected. They still work great, but if you are expecting exact levels of darkness you will want to double check that yourself.
Mavic 2 Polarized Filters
Checking polarization on your Mavic 2 filter is pretty easy. Rotate the filter in front of a polarized screen like a TV and you should see it go dark. All of the filters we checked passed the test. However, the mark indicating the orientation of the polarization wasn’t always correct.
We highly recommend you double check the polarization and mark these filters yourself otherwise you won’t get the effect that you desire.
Should you get a Mavic 2 filter?
Overall these filters are solid. They aren’t expensive and they get the job done. Are they perfect? No, but knowing that they still will do what you need. If you feel the need to buy expensive filters I would still recommend checking the ND levels and making sure the orientation of the polarization is correct. After all, you might be spending more money on essentially the same product.
