Best drone for less than $100 | LYZRC L200

I’m excited to share my experience with the LYZRC L200 Pro Max. This drone has been getting a lot of buzz as the best option under $100, and I finally got my hands on one to see if it lives up to the hype. Packed with features like a two-axis gimbal that shoots 2.7K video, brushless motors, GPS return to home, and more. It is hard to find a drone with these features for less than $100.

I ordered the L200 Pro Max from Banggood for $99. I decided against getting the optional obstacle avoidance module because, in my experience, these add-ons don’t really enhance the flying experience. They tend to just stop the drone in mid-air rather than navigate around obstacles, which can be more of a hassle than a help. Instead, I opted for the two-battery package, which was well worth the extra $15. The drone is lightweight at 216 grams, meaning no FAA registration is needed, and it’s not subject to remote ID requirements – a big plus for many drone enthusiasts.

One of the key features that impressed me is the brushless motors. These are much more efficient and durable than the brushed motors you typically find on drones in this price range. The inclusion of GPS is another game-changer, providing stability and enabling features like return to home, waypoint navigation, and follow-me mode. Before you fly, I highly recommend calibrating the drone to ensure GPS accuracy. The L200 Pro Max folds up nicely, comes with a carrying case, and includes space for an extra battery and the remote. But what really sets this drone apart is its camera.

The camera on the L200 Pro Max is pretty impressive for a drone under $100. It records video at 2560×1440 (2.7K) and takes photos at 3840×2160 (4K). While it’s not professional-grade, it’s pretty darn good for casual videography and photography. I did notice some issues like rising and fluttering at higher elevations and occasional pivoting, but these were minor and fairly common on drones in this price range. The battery life is about 20 minutes per charge, which is decent for a beginner drone. The remote control is user-friendly, and the app is intuitive, making it easy to access different flight modes and capture photos and videos.

Despite its many strengths, the L200 Pro Max does have a few drawbacks. It tends to drift and isn’t as stable as more expensive drones. The advertised range of 3000 meters with a video feed at 1200 meters seems a bit optimistic. In practice, you probably won’t want to fly that far anyway. If you lose video signal, the return-to-home function is there, but it’s not always precise. I found it was usually within 10 feet of the takeoff point, but I prefer to land it manually for better accuracy. Durability is another concern; I crashed mine a couple of times, and it hasn’t worked the same since. The crashes were minor, but the drone isn’t built to withstand much impact.

All in all, the LYZRC L200 Pro Max is an outstanding drone for its price. If you’re just starting out and want to dip your toes into drone videography without spending a fortune, this is a great choice. It has its limitations, but the brushless motors, GPS features, and solid camera make it a compelling option. If you have a bit more to spend, there are better drones out there, like the C-Fly Faith Mini 1 and 2 or the DJI Mini 4K. But for under $100, the L200 Pro Max offers incredible value and functionality.
