Being in the field of education I can say a lot has changed since I was in high school. There are a lot of new and specialized classes. There are medical classes that prep students to be therapists, nurses and doctors. There are big engineering programs with a variety of different specialties. Recently we had the opportunity to work with Amanda Henk, the 2018 US Air Force Engineering Teacher of the Year to co-teach a unit on UAVs at Huntley High School.
We taught the students the different classes of drones, their uses and potential career options that exist now and might exist in the future. We had discussions on how drones are used in agriculture, law enforcement and search and rescue operations.
Then we dove into learning about how a drone is built and the students had the opportunity to build their own drone. The students paired up and built SkyViper e1700 drones from scratch. It is an excellent kit to learn hands-on what goes into the construction of a drone.
We then did flying tutorials and held flying contests. We had a race, a precision landing, and a Ryze Tello programming contest. Half Chrome Drones provided small drones as prizes for the winners. Overall it was an excellent experience for both the students and us.
We also sponsor a drone club at Huntley High School. Jack coordinates bi-weekly meetings where students can get together and fly drones after school. Force1 donated 30 drones and Half Chrome picked up the tab to ship them to the school. Students have fun flying and learn how to repair the drones as they inevitably crash and break. The club is now learning how to add FPV equipment to drones and hope to compete in FPV racing events in the upcoming school year. If you are looking for a good beginner drone definitely check out Force1. Click here to see their excellent drones.
At Half Chrome, we believe that education is the key to a successful future and we enjoy donating our time to help where we can. We have also created a scholarship to help fund the seemingly ever-increasing costs of college. We recently awarded our initial recipient Whitney Wiemold as prepares for a career in precision agriculture. She knows that UAVs can have a positive impact on yields and has some excellent ideas. At Half Chrome, we have a lot of fun with drones, but we also want to use them for more than just taking pictures and racing. Why not pay it forward, with drones?
