What is the DJI Flip?

DJI Flip | The Mini 4 and the Neo had a baby…

DJI has introduced the Flip, a drone that stands out with its integrated propeller guards and folding design. Unlike traditional drones with optional, detachable propeller guards, the Flip’s design fully encloses the propellers, prioritizing safety. But why did DJI make this drone, and who is it for?

The Flip is essentially a niche version of the Mini 4 Pro. Both drones share the same size, weight, controller, transmission system, and camera, but the Flip’s propeller cages make it ideal for specific scenarios. It excels in close-proximity flying, making it safer to use around people and objects. Its design also allows for safe hand-launching and landing, eliminating the risk of injuries. It is similar to the smaller DJI Neo but with an improved camera and built in obstacle avoidance.

This drone is especially appealing to beginners and young pilots. The enclosed propellers reduce the chances of accidents, making it a great entry-level option for families. Additionally, its robust tracking features make it adept at following subjects while navigating tight spaces, aided by the physical protection of the propeller cages.

Despite the safety-first design, the Flip performs impressively. With a top speed of 36 mph, it matches the Mini 4 Pro. However, its flight time is reduced to 31 minutes due to a smaller battery needed to maintain a weight under 250 grams—an important threshold for regulatory advantages in many countries. The Flip lacks built in remote ID, but it won’t be required because the drone weighs less than 250 grams.

The Flip’s camera shines with 48-megapixel stills and 4K video at 60 fps, rivaling other DJI drones. It even supports advanced features like 10-bit D-Log and dual native ISO, delivering high-quality visuals. Its compact, foldable design ensures portability, and a four-way battery charger adds convenience.

While lacking omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, the Flip’s innovative propeller cages and lightweight design make it a standout choice for safe, versatile flying. Whether you’re a hobbyist or a parent introducing drones to your child, the Flip strikes a balance between performance and safety.
