The DJI Avata is more than just a cinewhoop-style drone. It is a tool that is allowing people access to the hobby in a way that just wasn’t possible before. The DJI Avata is safer, more stable, and easier to use than any other FPV drone. It also has a longer flight time, a better transmission system, and a superior camera than any existing FPV drone on the market today. This drone is a marvel of engineering but still many people in the FPV community hate it.
DJI Avata
The Avata is a fantastic little drone but it certainly has its critics. Part of that is because it is DJI, part of that is because it is different. It is hard to argue that there is a better FPV drone in terms of camera quality and ease of use and I’d rank those as my top two features when looking to buy a drone. Add the best in class transmission quality and flight time and this drone is hard to beat. So why all the haters?
For starters, it is expensive $650 for the drone by itself or $1110-1300 to buy the drone with the goggles and controller. To add to that it doesn’t come with a traditional controller but rather the motion sensing controller that is vastly different from every other drone on the market today. The build is made of plastic, rather than the carbon fiber that most FPV pilots are used to. Clearly, the Avata is a different kind of drone.
The DJI Avata doesn’t have flight modes like the Mini 3 Pro. There isn’t an active track, quick shots, or even an orbit mode. While it does have a return to home feature that is where the intelligent flight modes stop. You will have to pilot this drone on your own.
The Avata uses DJI’s O3+ transmission system and when paired to the new DJI Goggles 2 you’ll get a crystal clear 1080p image of what the drone sees. You could opt for the less expensive, different but certainly not confusingly names Goggles V2 and save about $220. The image will still be clear but you’ll be limited to 810p images. The O3+ system gives the Avata 10,000 meters (6.2 miles) of range.
The Avata has a flight time of 18 minutes, which is about half the flight time of the Mini 3’s 34 minutes. However, 18 minutes is 2-3 times better than most FPV drones can manage. The biggest drawback here is you’ll want extra batteries and they aren’t cheap. One battery will set you back $129 or you can opt for two and a charger for $280.
The DJI Avata Camera
The camera on the Avata is where it really sets it apart. Most FPV pilots have to attach a GoPro to their drones to get good footage, but the Avata camera eliminates the need for that. The Avata camera can capture video at 4K 60 fps. The camera sits on a one-axis gimbal and uses DJI Rocksteady to smooth out your footage. You can even use the gyro data and stabilize the footage yourself in a program like Reelsteady GO.
The DJI Avata isn’t a drone for everyone but it is a drone for anyone that is looking to capture dynamic footage in small spaces or around people. It is a tool that creators can use for real estate tours or epic one-take videos. This drone isn’t for everyone, but anyone that is into drones should definitely take a look at the Avata.
