The Beast EVO goes by a few different names. It is the ZLL SG906, Max3, Beast 3, and the Beast EVO. What you call it doesn’t matter. The question is: Is this the best drone you can buy for less than $300? With a 4K camera, intelligent flight modes, and obstacle avoidance sensors, it certainly seems like it might be.
The ZLL Beast EVO
The newest Beast drone by ZLL is absolutely their best iteration. The camera is improved, the range is improved and it boasts a 30-minute flight time. While this isn’t their first attempt at obstacle avoidance it is the first integrated system we have seen on a drone for less than $300. There have been add-on modules but they have had less than stellar results. Unfortunately, the new system is only marginally better than the original. It failed to identify obstacles in front of the drone but did recognize anything behind it. While the obstacle avoidance may not be a great selling feature the camera and transmission system are impressive.
The 4K camera is the best 4K camera you can get on a drone for less than $300. While the DJI Mini SE and Mini SE 2 camera is better it tops out at 2.7K and costs between $320-360. The gimbal does a decent job of smoothing out the footage and the new image transmission system will send back a clear HD image. Flying in normal mode is exceptionally slow and that is to allow the obstacle avoidance system time to process and react. That is probably the best way to fly to get clear and stable footage. The sensor is 1/3.2″ and is limited in lower light situations.
Beast Max3 Flight Modes
The flight modes on the Beast Evo are what you would expect. It has the return to home, orbit, follow as well as a few other interesting shots. However, the implementation of the app is cumbersome. It isn’t easy to navigate and has some interesting translation choices. Overall the modes are nice to have but could use some refinement. Return to home works well and is probably the most important.
The Beast Evo Max 3 is a good beginner drone. For $300 it is one of the better options out there. For a limited time, you can use the code: BGff6bff to save 18%. That makes it a much better deal. If you want to save a little more money I’d suggest looking at the MJX Bugs 18 Pro. It isn’t quite as nice but is easy to use and will save you another $50. If you can spend a little more the DJI Mini 2 SE is a much better option for about $330.
