MJX Bugs 3H: Altitude Hold on the Bugs is Here

The new altitude hold Bugs 3 is finally here. The Bugs 3H is the original with the awesome addition of altitude hold.  We were actually sent an early prototype of this Bugs 3 with altitude hold and it was an excellent quadcopter. More recently, we got our hands on the real deal when MJX sent us a pre-release Bugs 3H. We are impressed. Unlike competitor Syma, MJX seems to be making actual helpful upgrades to their drone line-up. Purists may scoff at the inclusion of altitude hold, but not us. We told MJX to make sure there was an off button for altitude hold, and they listened. Not only did they listen but they one-uped our request with a new feature that no other drone has.

The MJX Bug 3 H may not be all that different from the original, but it does have really nice styling. Other than the color and the top cover, the frame is pretty much the same as the original. This MJX Bugs 3H has altitude hold that you can turn off and on with the flip of a switch. This is a feature that we told MJX to include and apparently they listened. Not only does altitude hold turn off, but when you flip that switch the spring-loaded centering of the throttle also goes away!!! This is a really neat trick that no one else has. We applaud MJX for a clean implementation of this new and innovative feature.

The Bugs 3H features the same powerful and efficient brushless motors as the original Bugs 3. It has similar performance as the original when altitude hold is turned off, but altitude hold seems to limit the drone a little bit when it is turned on. Like the prototype we tested, you will be able to turn altitude hold off and on. This allows for a little more freedom when flying.

MJX is producing three different camera options for the new Bugs models. You have the option of their C4000, C5000, and C6000 cameras. All three are 8 MP HD cameras the difference being the C4000 records video in 1080p, the C5000 is 720p and has built-in 5G WiFi that will work with the Bugs Go app, and the top-of-the-line C6000 is 1080p and has built-in WiFi that also will connect to the Bugs app. The new Bugs is also capable of carrying a GoPro or other compatible action cameras if you already have your own. We strongly recommend the 1080p Camera with WiFi. The WiFi likely won’t have a ton of range but it will help you line up close range photographs.

There is an issue with the new camera mount. It positions the camera a little too far back so the wide angle lens on the camera sees a bit of the legs. We retrofitted our Bugs 3H with an older MJX camera mount that pushes the camera further forward and fixes this problem. We hope MJX resolves this issue with a different camera mount ASAP.

Bugs Go App

MJX has really upgraded their Bugs Go app and the functions of for the Bugs 3H are really good. The WiFi cameras now send altitude data and battery level to the app along with the camera feed. The integration of the camera buttons on the remote with the app are great – you can start or stop video with either the remote or the app, and the app knows what you are doing with the remote. Overall, the implementation and integration are great, we couldn’t have asked for more. So far the 5G WiFi range seems really good too.

We are we are glad that MJX has decided to produce this Bugs 3 H model. The version we tested was solid and we are hoping the final production model will be even better.
