The DJI Neo is the smallest drone in DJI’s lineup. This palm sized drone weighs just 135 grams and has a flight time of up to 18 minutes. This ultra portable drone is made to be able to get into the air in seconds so the user can capture a variety of quick shots. In many ways it is like the Hover X1, but it does much more.
The Neo features a 4K camera as well as ducted and covered brushless motors, AI subject tracking, and a variety of quick shot modes. This drone wasn’t built for “drone people” but rather for people that want to be able to capture drone footage without having to learn how to fly a drone.
The Neo in many ways will replace the Tello as the beginner drone in DJI’s lineup. It is designed to be an entry-level drone. Pilots can fly it by simply palm launching it in one of the flight modes like dronie or rocket, or they can take full control of it using their smartphone and DJI remote. When paired with the DJI RC-N3 it has a range of up to 10km or 6.2 miles.
Having a follow-me mode on a small drone like this is impressive. It is also the first drone that DJI has released with follow-me that doesn’t include active obstacle avoidance sensors. It does a good job but the pilot must take extra caution.
The Neo will also be able to be flown with the DJI goggles, DJI FPV remote, and even the motion controller if pilots choose. Flying FPV will offer a new perspective to pilots and is a very different experience for those familiar with the Mavic and Mini series of drones. The Neo can essentially be viewed as a mini Avata. This drone can do so much more than a typical “beginner” drone.
The Neo doesn’t have a full gimbal but uses DJI’s Rocksteady EIS to steady your video footage. While this may not be professional quality for pictures and video, it will be leaps and bounds better than most palm-sized drones. It features a 1/2″ sensor and a 12MP camera.
The Neo is a great beginner drone and a great FPV beginner drone. There are not a lot of drones out there that can do both of those things. The Neo is a tiny, versatile drone that makes an excellent first drone. However, if you want the best FPV drone, it is the DJI Avata 2, or if you want to get into aerial photography you’ll want to look at the Air or Mini series of drones from DJI. However, the Neo is a great place to start.
