DJI Mini 4 Pro

DJI Mini 4 Pro

The DJI Mini 4 Pro is the best drone that you can buy that weighs less than 250 grams.  It seems DJI has drawn inspiration from their Mini 3 Pro and the DJI Air 3, incorporating some of their best features into this new model. Notably, it now features omnidirectional optical avoidance and the O4 transmission system, offering a range of over 12 miles. Not to mention the impressive flight time that can top out over 45 minutes with the extended battery.

The camera on the Mini 4 Pro has also seen an upgrade, allowing you to shoot at 4K 100fps, a notable improvement over the Mini 3 Pro’s 4K 60fps capability. The camera is a more than capable piece of hardware that features a 1/1.3″ sensor. It can capture traditional 16:9 video as well as native 9:16 video for the growing social media market. You can capture stills at either 12MP or use the pixel binning 48MP option. While this drone may be small the camera itself is impressive for a drone of any size.

The Mini 4 Pro also features DJI’s assortment of intelligent flight modes. You will get the Quickshots, Mastershots, and even Active Track. With the new omnidirectional sensors, this little drone has become a much better tool for tracking and autonomous flight. DJI has added the Active Track 360 as well as Waypoints to the Mini 4.

The DJI Mini 4 Pro has also added a small but handy prop holder, and some models might offer the option to attach an LTE or 5G module for long-distance flights, though this might not be available everywhere. There are also some software and firmware enhancements, but not all of them may be available for all users.

However, it’s important to note that if you already own a Mini 3 Pro, Mini 3, or even an Air 3, the Mini 4 Pro doesn’t represent a significant leap forward and could even be considered a slight downgrade compared to the Air 3. So, if you have one of these drones, it might not be necessary to invest in the Mini 4 Pro. It is a great option but in my opinion just a modest upgrade from the Mini 3 Pro. If the price on the Mini 3 Pro starts to drop that might be a great value.

On the flip side, two specific groups should consider the Mini 4 Pro. Firstly, beginners looking for a high-quality drone under 250 grams will find it an appealing option, even though the DJI Mini 2 SE might be more than sufficient for most users. Secondly, professionals might find value in the Mini 4 Pro as a backup drone. Its compact size and capabilities make it a convenient addition to a professional’s toolkit, ideal for capturing backup shots or B-roll.

In summary, the DJI Mini 4 Pro is a solid mini drone, but it might not be the right choice for everyone. It offers a moderate upgrade from the Mini 3 Pro and a moderate downgrade from the Air 3. If you’re new to drone flying or need a reliable backup as a professional, it’s worth considering. However, if you already own one of its predecessors, it might not be worth the expense. Happy flying!
