The new DJI Mini 2 is a tiny little drone with some huge features. This little dynamo weighs less than 250 grams but has a 4K camera, a 31 minute flight time, and a range of up to 10,000 meters. DJI made some big improvements over the original Mavic Mini with this drone. Learn more about it here.
DJI Mini 2
The biggest differences between the original Mavic Mini and the Mini 2 are the upgraded camera as well as the Occusync 2.0 transmission system. While the camera specs remain the same the Mini 2 is now capable of shooting 4K footage at 30 fps. The 2.7K video of the original Mini was very good but this camera is even better. The 12 MP camera is capable of crisp clean photos and the three-axis gimbal will make sure your footage is buttery smooth. It uses a 1/2.3″ CMOS sensor and has a field of view of 83 degrees. Camera nerds will want to know that the aperture is f/2.8, ISO of 100-3200, and it has an electronic shutter of 4-1/8000. You can also shoot 2.7K at 30 fps or 1080p up to 60 fps.
You’ll also get improvements with a 100 mbps bit rate and you can now capture images in RAW format. This little Mini 2 is a lot more capable than the original. The Mini 2 adds 4x digital zoom as well. You can even quickly transfer images to your smartphone.
The Mini 2 uses the same remote controller as the DJI Mavic Air 2. This remote controller gives it Occusync 2.0 and the impressive 10,000 meter range. I like the controller however it is fairly large for such a small drone. It does take away from the compact, throw it in your bag, and go-feel that I got with the original Mini. The upside of the larger remote means a bigger battery and you can even charge your smartphone while you are flying.
DJI Mini 2 Flight Modes
The Mini 2 will utilize the minimalistic DJI Fly app. Keep in mind that the Mini 2 was built to be the drone for anyone, not just professional photographers. While this could be used as a photography tool it is likely that most professionals will stick to their Mavic 2 Pro or Mavic 2 Zoom. However, the addition of shooting in RAW makes this a tool that professionals will be able to use if they need a compact drone in their arsenal.
This drone was built for your dad, your cousin, your next-door neighbor. The intelligent flight modes and easy to use app make it so anyone can capture professional-looking pictures and video. DJI’s quick shots Dronie, Rocket, Circle, and Helix are holdovers from the original Mini. It also adds the Boomerang flight mode. They can be performed with a couple of clicks and yield awesome results. You will also get a handful of panoramic photo options from 180-degrees to a full sphere. With a new quick dowload to your phone feature you can share your pictures quickly and easily on social media. You can even have the DJI Fly app edit and tweak the photos and videos for you. We even put together a video that walks you through it below.
Mini 2 Specs
Arguably the most important feature of this little drone is its 249-gram weight. Somehow this little drone is even smaller than the original. That means it won’t be subject to FAA registration in the US. This also means lighter restrictions in other countries as well. The Mini 2 currently will also be exempt from the upcoming FAA remote ID program. The newer high voltage batteries will give it a flight time of up to 31 minutes.
The Mini 2 doesn’t have any obstacle avoidance sensors. It does use GPS and bottom sensors to help keep it stable. It will be your job as the pilot to make sure it doesn’t crash into anything while you are flying.
Should You Buy the DJI Mini 2?
If you want the best drone out there or you want something for professional use then the Mini 2 isn’t the drone for you. You’ll want to look at the Mavic 2 Pro. If you want something with all the bells and whistles like obstacle avoidance but don’t want to spend a fortune then I’d recommend the Mavic Air 2. If you want a small, portable drone that is easy to fly and can take excellent pictures and video then the DJI Mini 2 is the best drone you can buy for less than $500.
